How to Refinish Your Wood Deck

Refinishing a deck is not as complicated as you may think. In fact, it takes just a few steps:

Inspection
First, you should check for any loose boards or problems such as split wood or rotting. Replace any deck boards as need and secure any loose boards.
If you have a varnished or painted deck, you will need to strip off the old finish using paint stripper and a deck cleaner.
Power Washing
While this is an important step, you need to make sure you use the power washer properly, as improper use can ruin the deck boards. It is suggested that you use as low a pressure as you can and yet still clean the boards. It is also important to use a bleach or wood cleaner to maximize the brightness of the deck.
Sanding
Because the power washing can potentially raise boards or cause splinters, you will need to sand the deck. This is also effective against any other imperfections that may have accumulated on the deck. Using an orbital sander will make this task easier. Sand both the boards and deck.
Staining
The next step will entail choosing a quality stain that will give you optimal results. Many professionals recommend an oil-based semi-permanent stain for longer-lasting results. It is also important that the stain penetrates the wood as opposed to sits on top, as many cheaper products simply sit on top of the wood and inevitably peel. Additionally, using a natural bristle brush, rather than a polyester brush to apply the stain is recommended. This type of brush will give you a better flow of stain. Use the brush for smaller areas such as trim boards and handrails. Use a paint pad applicator for larger areas.
